Niederwölz

Niederwölz is a small market town in Styria, within the Murau district, set at the foot of the Wölzer Tauern range and close to the Zirbitzkogel massif. The village retains a historic centre typical of the region, with arcaded houses and a central square reflecting its former role as a local trading hub. The surrounding mountains make it a popular base for summer hiking, with numerous trails leading up to nearby peaks and alpine pastures, as well as for cross-country skiing and winter sports, thanks to the proximity of resorts such as Kreischberg and Frauenalpe. The wider Murtal valley is also known for the nearby Benedictine Abbey of St. Lambrecht, and for the neighbouring town of Murau, famous for its traditional brewery and historic steam railway, the Murtalbahn. Niederwölz thus offers a quiet, rural setting typical of Styria's alpine valleys, well suited to nature-based tourism, relaxation and exploring local heritage, away from the bustle of Austria's larger tourist resorts.
