Zuoz

Zuoz is a village in the Upper Engadine, in the canton of Graubünden, set at around 1,700 metres above sea level along the Inn valley, between Samedan and S-chanf. It is known for its remarkably well-preserved historic centre, lined with old patrician houses decorated with sgraffito and bay windows, characteristic of Engadine architecture. The main square, the Plaz, is home to the Planta Tower, a medieval remnant linked to the influential Planta noble family who shaped the village's history. Zuoz also hosts the Lyceum Alpinum, a well-known international boarding school that forms part of local life. The area is a popular starting point for summer mountain walks and winter sports, with a small local ski area and access to the valley's cross-country trails, notably used by the renowned Engadin Skimarathon. The surroundings feature larch and pine forests along with views of the neighbouring peaks. Local cuisine is best represented by the Engadine nut tart (Nusstorte), a caramelised walnut pastry typical of the region.
