Pontresina

Pontresina is a mountain village in the canton of Graubünden, located in the Upper Engadine at around 1,800 metres above sea level, a short distance from St Moritz. Nestled at the foot of the Bernina massif, it has served as a traditional starting point for mountaineering since the 19th century, with a long-standing tradition of mountain guides still reflected in its local heritage. The village provides access to the Roseg Valley, an unspoilt valley where horse-drawn carriages operate and which can also be explored on foot or by mountain bike up to the Roseg glacier. Nearby lies the Morteratsch glacier, reachable on foot from the railway station, as well as the Diavolezza cable car, offering views over surrounding peaks including Piz Bernina. In winter, Pontresina forms part of the route of the Engadine cross-country ski marathon and offers extensive Nordic skiing trails. The village retains an old Romanesque tower, a remnant of a medieval church, along with an Alpine museum tracing the region's history. Traditional Engadine architecture, featuring sgraffito façades, characterises the village centre.
