Sankt Margarethen im Lungau

Sankt Margarethen im Lungau is a municipality in the Tamsweg district, in the Austrian state of Salzburg, situated in the heart of the Lungau region. This mid-mountain area, bordered by the Lower Austrian Alps and the Nockberge range, forms part of the Lungau Biosphere Reserve, a protected zone recognised for its varied natural landscapes. The climate is typically alpine, with cold, snowy winters well suited to winter sports and mild summers ideal for hiking and mountain biking. The village lies close to Tamsweg, the district's main town, which offers the region's principal shops and services. The Lungau is also known for its well-established folk traditions, including processions featuring giant figures known as Samson, held in several villages of the region as part of local festive customs. With its rural, mountainous surroundings, Sankt Margarethen makes a fitting base for exploring hiking trails, cross-country ski routes and the unspoilt scenery of the Lungau, away from the busier tourist resorts found elsewhere in the Austrian Alps.
