Werfenweng

Werfenweng is a mountain village in the Austrian province of Salzburg, within the Pongau district, situated at the foot of the Tennengebirge range at an altitude of around 900 metres. The village is recognised in Austria as a pioneer of environmentally friendly tourism, promoting a soft mobility concept that favours electric shuttles and shared transport over private cars. In winter, Werfenweng offers a ski area suited to families and beginners, along with cross-country skiing trails and winter walking paths. In summer, the village serves as a starting point for mountain hikes, with views over the surrounding limestone peaks. Werfenweng lies close to the town of Werfen, known for Hohenwerfen Fortress and the Eisriesenwelt ice caves, one of the largest accessible ice caves in the world. The area thus combines alpine nature, regional heritage and tourism infrastructure geared towards sustainability, set within a typically Austrian Alpine landscape.
