Sankt Michael im Lungau

Sankt Michael im Lungau is a small municipality in the Lungau, the southernmost region of Salzburg province, Austria, close to the Katschberg pass. The village lies within the UNESCO Lungau-Nockberge Biosphere Reserve, which protects an unspoilt Alpine landscape of pastures, forests and the surrounding Lower Tauern peaks. It serves as a convenient base for outdoor pursuits: summer hiking along the local trails, and winter skiing and cross-country skiing thanks to its proximity to the Katschberg-Aineck ski area. The Lungau region is known for having some of the highest annual sunshine hours in Austria, making it a popular year-round destination for both summer and winter breaks. The village's architecture reflects traditional Salzburg Alpine style, with steep-roofed houses built to cope with heavy snowfall. The district town of Tamsweg lies just a few kilometres away, offering additional shops and services.
