Schruns

Schruns is a town in Vorarlberg, Austria, set within the Montafon valley at an altitude of around 700 metres. The settlement lies along the Litz river and is surrounded by peaks that often exceed 2,000 metres, giving it a typical alpine setting. Schruns connects to the Silvretta Montafon ski area, with the Hochjoch and Golm sectors reachable from the town, making it a popular base for winter sports. In summer, the surrounding region offers extensive hiking and mountain biking along marked trails leading up to the alpine pastures. The town also holds a certain literary significance, as the writer Ernest Hemingway stayed here on several occasions during the 1920s, a period he referenced in some of his writing. The historic centre retains traditional Vorarlberg architecture, with timber-fronted houses and a church whose tower is a distinctive feature of the townscape. Local cuisine draws on mountain dairy produce, particularly the region's characteristic cheeses. Schruns therefore serves as a convenient starting point for exploring the Montafon valley, whether in winter or summer.
