Neukirchen am Großvenediger

Neukirchen am Großvenediger is a village in the Pinzgau region of Salzburg province, Austria, lying at the foot of the Großvenediger, a glaciated peak rising to 3,657 metres within the Hohe Tauern range. The village serves as a gateway to the Hohe Tauern National Park and its side valleys, such as the Untersulzbachtal, known for waterfalls and high-mountain hiking trails. In winter, the Wildkogel ski area, reached by cable car directly from the village, offers alpine pistes and ski touring routes, while summer brings hiking, mountain biking and alpinism towards the surrounding glaciers. Neukirchen is also recognised for its traditional craft of woodcarved nativity scenes, a skill passed down through generations and still practised in several local workshops. The traditional Pinzgau architecture, with its timber farmhouses and parish church, reflects the rural, mountainous character of the area. Local cuisine focuses on mountain dairy produce and classic Austrian dishes, set within a well-preserved alpine landscape typical of the Salzburg region.
