Lofer

Lofer is a mountain village in the district of Zell am See, in the heart of Austria's Salzburgerland region, close to the Bavarian border. Nestled in the Saalach valley, it lies beneath the Loferer Steinberge massif, a limestone range popular with hikers and climbers for its steep faces and high-altitude trails. The village retains a traditional character, with shingle-roofed houses typical of the Pinzgau area and a parish church recognisable by its onion-domed tower. In winter, Lofer forms part of the Skicircus Saalbach-Hinterglemm-Leogang-Fieberbrunn ski area, accessible from the region, and also offers cross-country skiing and winter walking trails. In summer, the village serves as a base for climbing, mountain biking and hikes up to the surrounding alpine plateaus. The Saalach River, which runs through the valley, is suitable for rafting and kayaking. Lofer has an alpine climate with cold, snowy winters and mild summers, well suited to outdoor pursuits. Local cuisine features classic Austrian specialities, including hearty cheese and mountain meat dishes.
