Villach

Villach is a town in Carinthia, southern Austria, close to the Italian and Slovenian borders, and set along the River Drau. Its historic centre is arranged around the Hauptplatz, lined with colourful façades, and the parish church of St James, the main religious building in the old town. The surrounding area features several lakes, including Faaker See and Ossiacher See, as well as the Dobratsch massif, offering opportunities for hiking, swimming and winter sports depending on the season. Villach is also known for its thermal springs, notably in the Warmbad Villach district, an area associated with spa and bathing traditions. The town hosts a well-known carnival, the Villacher Fasching, one of the largest in Austria, alongside the Villacher Kirchtag, a major summer folk festival drawing large crowds. Well connected by rail and road, Villach serves as a practical base for exploring Carinthia and the neighbouring Alpine regions, combining modest urban heritage, lakeside scenery and firmly rooted local traditions.
