Rauris

Rauris is a mountain village located in the valley of the same name, in the Austrian province of Salzburg, within the Hohe Tauern Nature Park. The settlement lies along the Rauriser Ache river and serves as a starting point for summer hiking towards nearby glaciers and peaks, as well as for winter skiing on its local slopes. The area has a long-standing connection to gold panning, a tradition still offered today through workshops where visitors can try washing gold from the surrounding streams. Rauris is also home to part of the protected Rauriser Urwald, one of the last remaining primeval forests in Central Europe, accessible via marked trails. Traditional timber architecture and mountain farms shape the village's built landscape. Local cuisine reflects Austrian alpine traditions, featuring dairy products and game-based dishes. The mountain climate brings snowy winters suited to winter sports and mild summers ideal for hiking and mountain biking, making Rauris a year-round destination for outdoor activities in an unspoilt alpine setting.
