Mittersill

Mittersill is a small town in the Austrian province of Salzburg, located in the Pinzgau valley (Oberpinzgau), on the banks of the Salzach River and close to the Hohe Tauern National Park. The town serves as a gateway to East Tyrol via the Felbertauern Tunnel, which cuts through the neighbouring Alpine range. Overlooking the town, Mittersill Castle (Schloss Mittersill) reflects the settlement's historical past. Surrounded by mountains often exceeding 2,000 metres, the area is well suited to alpine and cross-country skiing in winter, as well as hiking and mountain biking in summer. The Pinzgau region, of which Mittersill is a local hub, is also known for its alpine pastures and traditional livestock farming, which support regional dairy and cheese production. Its proximity to Kitzbühel, just across the Tyrolean border, along with convenient road and tunnel access, makes it a practical base for exploring the Salzburg and Tyrolean Alps. The alpine climate, with snowy winters and mild summers, shapes both the local pace of life and the range of tourist activities available throughout the year.
