Fusch

Fusch, officially Fusch an der Großglocknerstraße, is a municipality in the Austrian state of Salzburg, within the Zell am See district. It is best known as the starting point of the famous Grossglockner High Alpine Road (Großglockner-Hochalpenstraße). The village lies in the Fusch valley, surrounded by alpine peaks, and serves as a popular base for hikers and nature lovers thanks to the nearby Ferleiten wildlife park, where red deer, chamois and ibex can be observed in a semi-natural setting. In winter, the area offers modest but accessible skiing opportunities, while summer favours hiking across mid- and high-altitude trails leading towards the surrounding glaciers. The neighbouring, more developed resorts of Zell am See and Kaprun are easily reached by car. Local architecture reflects the traditional Salzburg alpine style, featuring wooden chalets typical of the region. The mountain climate brings mild summers and harsh winters, supporting outdoor activities throughout the year. Fusch remains a quiet, unassuming destination, valued for its tranquillity and unspoilt natural surroundings at the heart of the Austrian Alps.
