Klagenfurt am Wörthersee

Klagenfurt am Wörthersee is the capital of the Austrian region of Carinthia, situated at the eastern end of Lake Wörthersee. The old town retains a baroque character, centred on Neuer Platz with its Lindwurm fountain, a dragon figure that has become the city's emblem, and the Alter Platz, lined with colourful façades, along with Klagenfurt Cathedral. The Landhaus, home to a heraldic hall, reflects the region's administrative history. Along the lakeshore, Europapark and the nearby Minimundus site, featuring miniature reproductions of famous landmarks from around the world, are popular spots. Lake Wörthersee, known for its comparatively warm summer waters, is well suited to swimming, sailing and lakeside walks. Nearby, the Pyramidenkogel observation tower offers views across the surrounding Alps. The city is also home to a university and traditionally hosts the Ingeborg Bachmann literature prize. Thanks to the lake and the region's southern position, the climate is milder than in much of Austria, making outdoor activities enjoyable for a good part of the year.
