Pörtschach am Wörthersee

Pörtschach am Wörthersee is a lakeside resort town set on a peninsula jutting into Lake Wörthersee, in the southern Austrian region of Carinthia. Known since the late 19th century as a fashionable holiday destination, the town has historical ties to composer Johannes Brahms, who stayed there on several occasions between 1877 and 1879 and composed some of his works during these visits. Lake Wörthersee, one of the warmest lakes in the Alps during summer, is well suited to swimming, sailing and other water sports, aided by the region's mild climate. Pörtschach features a lakeside promenade, popular for walks and offering views over the surrounding mountains. The town is also home to one of Austria's oldest golf courses, reinforcing its appeal as a destination for both sport and relaxation. Its central position on the lake makes it a convenient base for exploring other towns around the Wörthersee, such as Velden, or the nearby regional capital of Klagenfurt. Altogether, the setting combines water, greenery and mountain scenery typical of a Carinthian summer.
