Horní Maršov/Pec pod Sněžkou

Horní Maršov and Pec pod Sněžkou lie at the heart of the Giant Mountains (Krkonoše), in north-eastern Bohemia, close to the Polish border. Pec pod Sněžkou is a well-known mountain resort, nestled at the foot of Sněžka, the highest peak in the Czech Republic at 1,603 metres, reachable by cable car from the village centre. The area, part of the Krkonoše National Park (KRNAP), offers an extensive network of hiking trails and ski runs, particularly around the Obří důl valley and the Zlaté návrší plateau, popular for cross-country skiing. Horní Maršov, a quieter neighbouring village, retains a château (Aichelburg Chateau) and a baroque church, remnants of its history tied to the region's former German-speaking settlement. Local architecture features traditional timber houses typical of the Sudetenland. The mountain climate, with snowy winters and cool summers, supports outdoor activities year-round: hiking, alpine and cross-country skiing, and exploring the protected flora and fauna of the national park. The Úpa River runs through the valley, adding to the unspoilt natural setting of this Czech mountain destination.
