Viana do Castelo

Viana do Castelo is a city in northern Portugal, capital of the Alto Minho district, situated where the River Lima meets the Atlantic coast. Its historic centre, arranged around the Praça da República with its Renaissance fountain, features buildings such as the old town hall and the arcaded façade of the Misericórdia church. Overlooking the city, the Santa Luzia sanctuary, reached by funicular, offers views over the estuary and ocean. The Castelo de Santiago da Barra guards the harbour entrance, while the former hospital ship Gil Eannes, moored along the quay, now serves as a museum. A metal bridge attributed to Eiffel's workshops spans the Lima. The city is known for its traditional costumes and gold filigree jewellery, as well as for the Romaria da Nossa Senhora da Agonia, a major summer folk festival. Local cuisine favours salt cod, sarrabulho rice and the region's vinho verde. Nearby beaches, including Cabedelo, draw surfers and swimmers to a still relatively unspoilt coastal setting.
