Melres-Gondomar

Melres-Gondomar brings together two complementary sides of the Porto district: Melres, a rural parish set along the banks of the River Douro, and Gondomar, a municipality well known for its tradition of goldsmithing and filigree work, a craft recognised as part of Portugal's intangible heritage. The surrounding countryside is green and hilly, dotted with vineyards, in keeping with the character of the wider Douro hinterland, and lies just some twenty kilometres from central Porto. Melres is particularly appreciated for its riverside stretches along the Douro, ideal for walking and, in summer, river bathing, along with footpaths tracing the water's edge. Gondomar itself retains a modest but active historic centre, home to working goldsmith workshops. The area remains largely residential and rural, well away from the busier tourist routes, making it a peaceful base from which to explore the Douro valley or venture into Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.
