Caminha

Caminha is a small town in northern Portugal, in the Alto Minho region, situated at the mouth of the River Minho on the border with Spain. Its historic centre retains a medieval layout, with stone-fronted houses, the Torre do Relógio clock tower and the Praça Conselheiro Silva Torres, a central square lined with arcades and cafés. The Igreja Matriz, built in a late Gothic and Manueline style, reflects the town's former importance as a river port. Remnants of old fortifications recall its strategic role during the Age of Discovery. Nearby, Moledo beach, backed by pine woods, is popular for swimming and walking. The River Minho allows ferry crossings to the Spanish town of A Guarda in Galicia and is suited to water activities such as sailing and fishing. Local cuisine focuses on river and sea produce, including lamprey and grilled fish. Caminha also serves as a convenient base for exploring Peneda-Gerês National Park and the vineyard villages of the Vinho Verde wine region, making it a practical stop for visitors touring the wider Minho area.
