Peniche

Peniche is a coastal town in Portugal's Leiria district, sitting at the tip of a rocky peninsula exposed to the Atlantic. Traditionally a fishing town, it retains an active harbour where fish and seafood are landed daily, underpinning a local gastronomy known for tinned sardines and fresh seafood dishes. The town has also become one of Europe's leading surfing destinations, largely thanks to Supertubos beach, renowned for its powerful, consistent waves that draw both amateur and professional surfers from around the world. The historic centre features a 16th-century fortress, once used as a political prison under the Estado Novo regime and now open to visitors as a cultural space. Peniche is also the main departure point for boat trips to the Berlengas nature reserve, valued for its clear waters, lighthouse and seabird colonies. The blustery, temperate Atlantic climate strongly shapes the town's character, blending maritime tradition, seaside tourism and a strong surf culture.
