São Brás de Alportel

São Brás de Alportel is a small inland town in Portugal's Algarve region, within the Faro district, set at the foot of the Serra do Caldeirão hills. Unlike the coastal resorts, it retains a rural, authentic character shaped by a long-standing cork industry that once underpinned the local economy. The Algarve Costume Museum (Museu do Trajo) reflects this heritage, showcasing traditional agricultural and craft practices from the region. The town centre, lined with whitewashed houses and terracotta roofs, is pleasant to wander through, as is the Fonte Férrea park, a wooded area popular for relaxing walks and picnics. The surrounding countryside offers hiking trails through cork oak groves, almond trees and olive groves, giving a taste of the Mediterranean landscape typical of the Algarve's interior. Local honey and medronho, a traditional fruit brandy, remain part of the area's produce, still found at local markets. With a mild year-round climate and a central location roughly twenty minutes from both the beaches and Faro, São Brás de Alportel makes a quiet, convenient base for exploring the Algarve away from the busier coastal crowds.
