Monte Gordo

Monte Gordo is a seaside resort in the eastern Algarve, Portugal, known for its long stretch of fine sandy beach backed by a pine grove that shelters it from the wind. The seafront, lined with a pedestrian promenade, is home to restaurants specialising in grilled fish and seafood, cafés and small shops. The town has a casino, one of its long-standing landmarks, along with a fishing harbour reflecting its history tied to the sardine trade. Monte Gordo lies just a few kilometres from Vila Real de Santo António, a border town with Spain, from where a ferry crosses the Guadiana River to the Andalusian town of Ayamonte. The region enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters, drawing visitors across much of the year. Nearby, there are opportunities for cycling, golf and excursions to the salt marshes and natural areas along the coast, characteristic of the eastern Algarve, which remains quieter and less developed than the western part of the region.
