Loulé

Loulé is an inland town in the Algarve, in the district of Faro, situated around ten kilometres from the coast and the seaside resorts of Quarteira and Vilamoura. Its historic centre retains a layout of narrow streets and whitewashed houses reflecting its Moorish heritage, including the remains of Loulé Castle and the parish church of São Clemente. The municipal market, housed in a building with neo-Moorish architecture, hosts a well-known traditional Saturday market selling local produce, dried fruits, cheeses and handicrafts. The town is also recognised for its carnival, one of the oldest and most popular in mainland Portugal. Local crafts such as copperware, leatherwork and esparto grass weaving remain part of the region's cultural identity. Nearby, the Serra do Caldeirão hills provide a natural setting for walking and hiking, while almond and fig cultivation characterise the surrounding agricultural landscape. Loulé enjoys the typical Mediterranean climate of the Algarve, with hot, dry summers and mild winters, making it a destination visited throughout the year.
