Ferragudo

Ferragudo is a fishing village on the eastern bank of the Arade estuary in the Algarve, facing Portimão and the resort of Praia da Rocha. The village retains an authentic character, with cobbled lanes, whitewashed houses and a small central square shaded by an old fig tree. The Castelo de São João do Arade, built to guard the river mouth, overlooks the waterfront and remains a notable landmark, though it is not open to visitors. Nearby beaches are well regarded, including the broader, dune-backed Praia Grande and the more sheltered Praia do Pintadinho, tucked between cliffs. The traditional fishing harbour still shapes daily life in the village, and several restaurants serve freshly caught fish and seafood. Ferragudo sits close to Portimão and its wider range of shops and services, while keeping a quieter, village-like atmosphere of its own. The Algarve's Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters, supports outdoor activities throughout the year, from swimming to coastal walking, making the area popular with those seeking a more relaxed base within easy reach of larger towns.
