Ljutomer

Ljutomer is a small town in north-eastern Slovenia, in the Prlekija region, known for its winemaking heritage and rolling vineyard landscapes. It lies close to the Jeruzalem hills, one of the country's most renowned wine routes, where local varieties such as Riesling and Traminer can be sampled. The town is also home to one of Slovenia's oldest horse-racing tracks, with races forming part of the area's long-standing tradition. Its historic centre retains several buildings reflecting the region's Austro-Hungarian past. The surrounding countryside offers opportunities for walking and cycling through vine-covered hills and traditional Prlekija villages, many of which feature family-run cellars offering tastings and local produce. The area experiences a continental climate, with warm summers and cooler winters well suited to viticulture. Ljutomer makes a quiet base for exploring this lesser-visited part of Slovenia, combining rural heritage, regional cuisine and well-preserved wine-growing scenery, away from the busier tourist routes typically associated with the country's more famous destinations.
