Hasselfelde

Hasselfelde is a small town in the Harz region of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, set at around 450 metres above sea level amid the wooded, hilly landscape typical of this low mountain range. The town is best known as a terminus of the Selketalbahn, a narrow-gauge steam railway that winds through several valleys of the eastern Harz, linking Hasselfelde with villages such as Stiege, Güntersberge and Alexisbad. The surrounding forests and hills make it a good base for walking and mountain biking in summer, and for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter when snow settles on the trails. The air quality in the area is considered particularly good, and nearby villages have been granted climatic health resort status. Hasselfelde also serves as a convenient starting point for exploring the wider Harz region, with towns such as Wernigerode and Quedlinburg — the latter a UNESCO World Heritage site noted for its historic town centre — within about an hour's drive. Local life remains quiet and rural, centred on nature tourism and the region's railway heritage.
