Hel

Hel is a small Polish port town located at the very tip of the Hel Peninsula, a narrow strip of land stretching into the Bay of Gdańsk on the Baltic Sea. Once a fishing village, it has retained its maritime character, visible in its harbour and stalls selling smoked fish. The town is home to a working lighthouse and a set of Second World War fortifications, now housing a museum dedicated to coastal defence. The Hel Marine Station, run by the University of Gdańsk, includes a seal sanctuary where grey seals are kept and studied, a species once extinct in the Baltic and since reintroduced to the area. The peninsula itself, lined with pine forests and dunes, offers long sandy beaches popular in summer and is well known among kitesurfers thanks to its steady winds. Hel can be reached from Gdańsk or Gdynia by boat or by road along the peninsula. The town remains primarily a summer destination, valued for its coastline, its port atmosphere and its easy access from the Tricity area.
