Unterwössen

Unterwössen is a Bavarian village in the Chiemgau region, lying in the Tiroler Achen valley within the area known as the Achental, not far from Lake Chiemsee and the Austrian border. The village is known for its gliding airfield, one of Germany's oldest soaring sites, in use since the 1920s and still active today. A cable car up to the Hochplatte summit (around 1,650 m) provides access to a modest ski area in winter and an extensive network of hiking trails in summer, with views over the Chiemgau Alps and neighbouring Tyrolean peaks. The village retains a rural character shaped by dairy farming and traditional alpine pastures (Almen) typical of the region. The surrounding countryside also offers cross-country skiing tracks and winter walking paths. Neighbouring villages such as Reit im Winkl and Marquartstein round out the local tourism offer. The alpine climate, with snowy winters and mild summers, supports year-round tourism centred on nature and outdoor pursuits.
