Breisach

Breisach am Rhein is a small town in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, sitting on the banks of the Rhine directly opposite Neuf-Brisach in Alsace, to which it is connected by a bridge. Built on a hill, the town is overlooked by the Stephansmünster, a Gothic and Romanesque collegiate church offering wide views over the Rhine valley, the Kaiserstuhl hills and the Black Forest. The old town retains a picturesque character, with colourful houses, a market square and town hall. Breisach makes a convenient base for exploring the Kaiserstuhl wine region, known for white wines such as Pinot Gris and Riesling, as well as for cycling routes along the river. Its position on the border makes it a practical starting point for day trips to Colmar, Freiburg im Breisgau or the wider Alsace region. River cruises along the Rhine also depart from its harbour. Shaped by a turbulent history linked to its strategic location, the town blends German and French influences, evident in both its architecture and regional cuisine.
