Offenburg

Offenburg is a town in Baden-Württemberg, within the Ortenau district, set between the Black Forest and the Rhine plain, close to the French border and Strasbourg. Once a Free Imperial City, it retains a pleasant historic centre for walking, with half-timbered houses, the town hall and a lively market square. The town holds a notable place in German democratic history: it was at the Salmen building in 1847 that the Offenburg Programme was drafted, an early document calling for democratic freedoms. The surrounding countryside forms part of the Baden Wine Route, known for its Riesling and Pinot Noir vineyards, ideal for walks through the Ortenau hillsides. The river Kinzig runs through the town, offering cycling routes towards the Black Forest. Europa-Park, one of Germany's best-known theme parks, lies around fifteen kilometres away in Rust, making Offenburg a convenient base for families. Altogether, the town serves as a practical starting point for exploring regional heritage alongside the surrounding vineyards and forested landscapes.
