Aviemore

Aviemore is a small town in the Scottish Highlands, set within the Cairngorms National Park in Strathspey. Situated on the River Spey, it has long served as a base for year-round outdoor pursuits. In winter, it's known for its proximity to the Cairngorm Mountain ski slopes, reachable via a funicular railway that runs close to the summit. For the rest of the year, the area draws visitors for hillwalking, mountain biking across an extensive network of forest trails, and watersports on nearby lochs such as Loch Morlich. The Strathspey Steam Railway, a heritage line, connects Aviemore to Broomhill and Boat of Garten, offering a glimpse into Scotland's railway history. Local wildlife, including red deer, golden eagles and occasionally the free-ranging Cairngorm reindeer herd, forms part of the area's natural appeal. The town itself remains compact, with outdoor equipment shops, pubs and restaurants serving traditional Scottish fare.
