Plau am See

Plau am See is a small town on the shores of the Plauer See, one of the larger lakes in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, within the Mecklenburg Lake District. The town is known for its historic lifting bridge spanning the canal that links the lake to the River Elde, as well as the remains of its castle set on a hill overlooking the town and lake. The historic centre retains half-timbered houses and a brick Gothic-style church typical of northern Germany. Plau am See serves as a popular base for boating, canoe and boat hire, and cycling along the lake's wooded shores. Swimming, fishing and lake cruises, including trips by steamboat, are among the usual activities on offer to visitors during the warmer months.
