Rheinsberg

Rheinsberg is a small town in Brandenburg, north of Berlin, best known for its Baroque palace, Schloss Rheinsberg, once the residence of the young Frederick the Great before he became King of Prussia. Set beside the Grienericksee lake and surrounded by parkland, the palace now houses a museum dedicated to this period and hosts a summer chamber opera festival held in its courtyard. The town also inspired writer Kurt Tucholsky, author of the novella "Rheinsberg: A Picture Book for Lovers". Rheinsberg is further noted for its porcelain manufactory, established in the 19th century, whose wares can still be found in local shops. Located at the heart of the Mecklenburg-Brandenburg lake district, the town serves as a popular base for sailing, canoeing and walks along the many surrounding lakes and canals. The overall atmosphere is quiet and unhurried, typical of small German provincial towns, with a pleasant historic centre well suited to exploring on foot.
