Grange Over Sands

Grange-over-Sands is a small Victorian seaside town in Cumbria, set on the shores of Morecambe Bay at the edge of the Lake District. Known for its notably mild microclimate for the region, sometimes nicknamed the 'Riviera of the North', the town offers a peaceful atmosphere and elegant Victorian and Edwardian architecture. The seafront promenade, lined with well-maintained ornamental gardens, provides sweeping views over the estuary and its shifting tides, known locally for treacherous quicksand. The historic railway station reflects the town's growth as a tourist destination in the 19th century. Walkers often head up nearby Hampsfell, a hill rising to around 220 metres, home to Hampsfell Hospice, a stone folly offering panoramic views across the bay and surrounding countryside. A few miles away, the village of Cartmel draws visitors for its medieval priory and its well-known sticky toffee pudding. Grange-over-Sands makes for a quiet base from which to explore the southern Lake District, away from the busier crowds of the more popular lakes.
