Eilenburg

Eilenburg is a small town in Saxony, located in the Nordsachsen district, around thirty kilometres north-east of Leipzig. Set on the banks of the River Mulde, it retains a historic centre arranged around a market square lined with half-timbered houses and older buildings. Eilenburg Castle (Schloss Eilenburg), with origins dating back to the Middle Ages, stands on a rocky rise above the town and remains its principal landmark, offering views over the Mulde valley. St Nicholas's Church (Nikolaikirche) also forms part of the town's heritage. The river running through the town has been prone to significant flooding in the past, notably in 2002 and 2013, events that shaped the area's recent history. Eilenburg is a popular stop for cyclists following the Mulde Cycle Path (Mulderadweg), which links several towns across Saxony. The surroundings are quiet and largely residential, typical of small towns in this part of Germany, while its proximity to Leipzig provides convenient access to urban, cultural and commercial amenities.
