Lochem

Lochem is a small town in the eastern Netherlands, located in the Achterhoek region of Gelderland province, close to the German border. Set along the River Berkel, it enjoys a green, tranquil setting of woodlands, meadows and streams typical of this part of the country. The town centre retains a traditional feel, with shopping streets, cosy cafés and a lively weekly market. The surrounding countryside is particularly popular for outdoor pursuits such as walking, horse riding and, above all, cycling, thanks to an extensive network of cycle paths linking nearby villages and forested areas across the Achterhoek. The region is also known for its traditional half-timbered farmhouses and gently rolling landscapes, offering a contrast to the flatter scenery found elsewhere in the Netherlands. Lochem makes a convenient base for exploring this less touristy yet authentic corner of the country, where rural life and nature play a central role. The climate is temperate and maritime, with mild summers and cool winters, making it well suited to nature-based breaks throughout the year.
