Turku

Turku, on Finland's south-western coast, is the country's oldest city and former capital. It stretches along the Aura River, around which its main landmarks are found: the 13th-century Turku Castle at the river mouth, and the cathedral, regarded as Finland's most significant religious building. The riverside quays, lined with restaurant boats, are popular for walks, particularly in summer. The city is also known for its covered market hall, offering regional produce and local specialities. Turku serves as a gateway to the Finnish archipelago, with its thousands of islands reachable by ferry, a region favoured for sailing and nature-based stays. The city is home to several museums, including the Forum Marinum maritime museum, and has a lively student population that gives the centre much of its character. The climate is temperate, with mild summers and cold, snowy winters. Turku makes a convenient base for exploring both Finland's historical heritage and the coastal scenery of the surrounding archipelago.
