Sastamala

Sastamala is a town in the Pirkanmaa region of Finland, formed in 2009 through the merger of Vammala with neighbouring municipalities including Mouhijärvi, Äetsä and Kiikoinen. Set beside Lake Rautavesi and close to the Kokemäenjoki River, the area is typified by Finnish countryside scenery of forests and lakes, well suited to fishing, boating and walking. The town is home to Tyrvää Stone Church, dating from the early 16th century and regarded as one of the oldest surviving medieval churches in Finland, making it a notable architectural landmark in the region. Each summer, Sastamala hosts the Antiquarian Book Days (Vanhan kirjallisuuden päivät), a long-running cultural event attracting book lovers and history enthusiasts from across the country. Historically, the town developed around industries such as woodworking and textiles. Today, Sastamala retains a quiet, unhurried character, combining rural heritage with small-scale local industry, and offers visitors a calm setting in which to explore the Finnish countryside and its rich cultural past.
