Ruovesi

Ruovesi is a municipality in central Finland, within the Pirkanmaa region, known for its forested landscapes and lakes typical of inland Finland. The area borders the large Lake Näsijärvi and includes part of Helvetinjärvi National Park, noted for its rocky gorges, hiking trails and views over steep-sided lakes. The region is also linked to the painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela, who built his studio home, Kalela, on the shores of Lake Ruovesi; it is now open to visitors and forms part of Finland's national art history. The humid continental climate brings long, snowy winters well suited to cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and ice fishing, while short but bright summers are ideal for swimming, canoeing and foraging for berries and mushrooms in the surrounding forests. Scattered dwellings, often traditional timber houses with a sauna, reflect the rural way of life typical of this part of the country. Ruovesi remains a popular choice for peaceful, nature-based stays, located just a short drive from the city of Tampere.
