Hämeenlinna

Hämeenlinna is a historic town in southern Finland, located in the Kanta-Häme region on the shores of Lake Vanajavesi. Founded in the 16th century around its medieval fortress, Häme Castle, it is regarded as one of the oldest inland towns in the country. This red-brick castle, originally built by the Swedes, is open to visitors and traces the region's military and administrative history. The town is also known as the birthplace of composer Jean Sibelius, whose childhood home is now a small museum open to the public. The lakeside setting offers opportunities for walking, summer swimming and water-based activities, while the town centre retains a peaceful atmosphere with its traditional wooden buildings. Hämeenlinna has a humid continental climate, with cold, snowy winters suited to winter sports and mild summers. Well connected by rail from Helsinki, roughly an hour away, the town makes for a popular cultural and natural stopover in south-central Finland.
