Hailuoto

Hailuoto is an island in the Gulf of Bothnia, off the coast of Oulu in north-western Finland, reachable year-round by a free ferry from Oulunsalo. It is the largest Finnish island in the gulf, characterised by flat terrain shaped by post-glacial land uplift, a phenomenon that continues to gradually expand its surface area. The fishing village of Marjaniemi, with its historic lighthouse and harbour, is a notable landmark, as are the extensive sandy beaches and dunes along the western coast, popular during the summer months. Hailuoto's wooden church, dating back to the 18th century, reflects the island's architectural heritage. The island is known for its wetlands, which attract migratory birds, as well as for walking and cycling opportunities across its largely level landscape. Life on the island is quiet, with no traffic lights and a small resident population traditionally sustained by fishing and farming. The distinctive northern light, with long summer days and harsh winters marked by sea ice, strongly shapes the atmosphere and seasonal activities on offer.
