Rovaniemi, Ounasvaara

Ounasvaara is a wooded hill rising to around 242 metres, located right on the doorstep of Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland, just a short distance from the Arctic Circle. The area is best known for its ski resort, which offers alpine slopes, ski jumping hills and a network of illuminated cross-country trails that see heavy use during the long winter season. In summer, the hill turns into a hiking and mountain biking destination, with trails offering open views over the town of Rovaniemi and the Ounasjoki river below. The region has a subarctic climate, with cold, snowy winters ideal for spotting the Northern Lights between September and March, and short summers that benefit from the midnight sun. Rovaniemi itself, the nearest town, serves as the usual starting point for classic Lapland outdoor activities such as husky sledding and snowmobiling. Ounasvaara therefore offers a natural setting well suited to combining a stay close to town with the typical outdoor pursuits of the region.
