Luumäki

Luumäki is a municipality in south-eastern Finland, in the South Karelia region, set within the Saimaa lake district. It is known for Fort Taavetti, an 18th-century defensive fortification built during Swedish rule to guard the border against Russia; its stone remains form a historic site open to visitors today. Luumäki is also an important railway junction, where the line splits towards Vainikkala on the Russian border and towards the Savonlinna region. The surrounding landscape, typical of South Karelia, combines dense forests, lakes and small farms, offering good conditions for outdoor pursuits such as fishing, hiking, and berry or mushroom picking in summer, as well as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter. The nearby Lake Saimaa, Finland's largest lake, also allows for boating and swimming during the warmer months. The area has a humid continental climate, with mild summers and long, snowy winters typical of south-eastern Finland. Luumäki remains a quiet destination, valued for its tranquillity and modest yet genuine historical heritage.
