Hankasalmi

Hankasalmi is a rural municipality in the Central Finland region (Keski-Suomi), located around thirty kilometres east of Jyväskylä. It sits within the classic Finnish Lakeland landscape, featuring numerous bodies of water, including Lake Kynsivesi, surrounded by extensive coniferous and birch forests. The sparsely populated area is characterised by scattered farmhouses and holiday cottages (mökki), many set along the lakeshores. Outdoor activities are central to local life: fishing, hiking, and berry or mushroom picking in summer, alongside cross-country skiing and ice fishing in winter. The sauna, a cornerstone of Finnish culture, is typically part of any stay in the local accommodation. The humid continental climate brings long, snowy winters, contrasting with short but bright summers thanks to the clear nights of the far north. Hankasalmi is primarily a gateway for exploring the surrounding countryside and enjoying a peaceful atmosphere away from urban bustle, while still remaining within reasonable reach of the amenities offered by Jyväskylä, the region's main city.
