Suomussalmi

Suomussalmi is a municipality in the Kainuu region of eastern Finland, close to the Russian border. The area is characterised by taiga forest, countless lakes and unspoilt nature, with the nearby Hossa National Park popular for its hiking trails, canoe routes and ancient rock paintings. Suomussalmi is historically noted for the Winter War battles of 1939-1940, particularly the Battle of Raate Road, which is documented at the Raatteen Portti museum. The municipality is also home to the 'Silent People' field of scarecrow-like straw figures, created as a memorial to the war's victims. The region offers a typical southern Lapland setting: dense forests, rivers, wildlife such as moose and semi-domesticated reindeer, and a pronounced continental climate with long, snowy winters ideal for cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and aurora borealis viewing. In summer, long daylight hours favour fishing, berry-picking and countryside walks. Suomussalmi appeals mainly to visitors interested in wartime history and vast Nordic wilderness, well away from urban bustle.
