Puolanka

Puolanka is a rural municipality in the Kainuu region of east-central Finland, characterised by extensive boreal forests, lakes and the sparse settlement pattern typical of the Finnish north. Nearby, the Paljakka area is home to a nature reserve known for its preserved old-growth forest, alongside a resort offering cross-country skiing and hiking. The Hepoköngäs waterfall, one of the tallest in Finland, is a notable natural feature of the municipality, reachable via marked walking trails. The region has a cold continental climate, with long, snowy winters well suited to winter sports and northern lights viewing, and short but bright summers thanks to the clear nordic nights. Sparsely populated, the area provides a peaceful setting for nature-based stays, fishing, and seasonal berry and mushroom picking, as well as winter activities such as snowmobiling and snowshoeing. Puolanka remains a low-key destination within Kainuu, valued for its authenticity and unspoilt natural surroundings, well away from the busier tourist resorts found elsewhere in Finland.
