Kajaani

Kajaani is the administrative capital of the Kainuu region in eastern Finland, situated on the Kajaaninjoki river, which flows into Lake Oulujärvi, one of the country's largest lakes. The town retains the ruins of Kajaani Castle (Kajaanin linna), built in the 17th century, along with a historic centre linked to Elias Lönnrot, compiler of the Kalevala, who worked as a district doctor in the area. The Kainuu Museum documents the region's history and local traditions. Kajaani has its own airport and railway station, making it a convenient gateway to the surrounding wilderness. The area is well suited to hiking, fishing and nature-watching in summer, while winter brings good conditions for cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and, on clear nights, the chance to see the Northern Lights. The climate is continental and northern, with short, bright summers and long winters that are typically snow-covered from November to April. Kajaani serves as a quiet base for exploring the forests, lakes and peatlands characteristic of the Kainuu region.
