Kouvola

Kouvola is a town in south-eastern Finland, located in the Kymenlaakso region, formed in 2009 through the merger of several municipalities including Kuusankoski, Anjalankoski and Valkeala. As one of the country's key railway junctions, it holds a strategic position between Helsinki and the Russian border. The Kymijoki River runs through the area and is well known for fishing, particularly salmon. Nearby lies Repovesi National Park, valued for its hiking trails, lakes suited to canoeing, and rock formations typical of the Finnish bedrock. The town is also home to the Tykkimäki amusement park, a classic family destination in Finland, as well as the Poikilo regional museum, which traces local and industrial history, the area having long relied on the timber and paper industries. The climate is continental, with cold, snowy winters ideal for Nordic activities such as cross-country skiing, and mild summers that favour outdoor pursuits around the surrounding lakes and forests. Kouvola therefore serves as a convenient base for exploring the natural landscapes of south-eastern Finland.
