Heinola

Heinola is a small town in the Päijät-Häme region of Finland, set on the shore of Lake Ruotsalainen and close to the vast Päijänne lake system. The town has grown around its wooded eskers, most notably Kirkkoharju, a ridge offering scenic views and popular walking trails. Heinola is also known for its spa hotel, Heinolan Kylpylä, which draws visitors seeking relaxation by the water. Along the main road (Route 5), a giant wooden sculpture of a woodpecker has become a distinctive local landmark. The town retains a collection of 19th-century wooden buildings, including a church dating from 1885. The surrounding countryside lends itself to outdoor pursuits typical of central Finland, such as hiking along the eskers, canoeing on the Päijänne waterways, cross-country skiing in winter and fishing. Heinola has a quiet, provincial atmosphere, well removed from urban bustle, yet remains easily reachable from Helsinki, roughly 140 kilometres to the south-west.
