Sulkava

Sulkava is a small municipality in the South Savo region of Finland, set within the Saimaa lake district, the country's largest lake system. The area, largely covered by forests and water, offers a typical Finnish lakeland setting, well suited to fishing, boating and stays in lakeside cottages. Sulkava is particularly known for hosting the annual Sulkava Rowing Race (Sulkavan suursoudut) each summer, a popular traditional rowing event that draws numerous participants to the waters of Lake Saimaa. The sparsely populated municipality retains a rural, peaceful character, with an economy based on forestry, agriculture and nature tourism. The continental climate brings long, cold winters, ideal for activities such as cross-country skiing and ice fishing, alongside short but bright summers thanks to the long Nordic daylight hours. The region serves as a gateway for exploring the Saimaa landscape, its islands and traditional saunas, within a quiet setting well away from Finland's larger urban centres.
